The battle for the media consumer’s mind is fought on different levels. On the web, social media, and mobile devices. On the traditional television sets. The home and office. Advertisements on our phones. Hulu. Our cable and satellite boxes. More. There are fewer traditional ways to attract our attention, and it’s becoming harder for businesses to simply depend on the ability to design a compelling product or service and target the market. Why are so many people checking Twitter in the middle of their scheduled live-TV viewing time? Because they want to see what is happening and have a simple way to respond to the things they like. How can I still reach those people after they’ve opened the email that linked to a streaming service that’s paying to reach them? TV landscape shrinking? The battle for your attention. There are ways that companies can harness the power of the different platforms and reach more people in more places. The fact that advertising can be turned into a game or a chore – or, more accurately, it can be used to attract people who can’t be turned into a game or a chore – is a great asset. But it’s not a business strategy. It’s more a set of relationships that have been forged and nurtured over time. And that is getting increasingly hard to do, given the constant expansion of media. Facebook is out. Instagram is out. And so are others. Can Twitter last as a business? Snapchat is a daily part of my life. But I don’t know that I’m going to use the platform as my main media source. I use it to stay connected with friends and family, but I’m not sure that I want to use it as a main source of information for myself. Every media channel is different and none of them should be seen as a replacement for television. Just like television, you can reach millions of people on multiple platforms, and the various business strategies involved with reaching people in their homes and workplaces are evolving. Still, the media landscape is changing more and more each day. So it’s important to understand your audience. Or, better yet, to find the people who are already part of your audience.
